Wild Places News

April 2026

JMT Quartz Top Bleed

Dear Supporter

Welcome to our latest news and events round-up, keeping you connected to the work we’re doing to protect, restore and stand up for wild places.

As the days grow longer and warmer, our teams are out on the land, advocating for wild places, restoring damaged landscapes and helping more people experience and care for them.

You can see this work in action at Glenlude, our award-winning conservation hub in the Scottish Borders. That's why we’re aiming to raise £50,000 this spring to support its future; from habitat restoration and community engagement to accessibility and footpaths, we’d love your support.

If you’re able to act now, your donation could go even further. Through the Big Give Glenlude Appeal, all contributions will be doubled until 12 noon on 29 April, after which we’d love you to donate directly to our Glenlude Appeal.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Advocating for wild places

This month, you can read about the policy team's response to the Scottish Government’s consultation to increase the threshold for onshore electricity generation, which would allow more decisions to be made by local authorities. Find out more about this and our campaign to reform the planning system.

We were delighted to hear that the Scottish Government rejected Culachy - a proposal for eight 200m turbines and a battery storage system near Loch Ness - and see it as a win for wild places. Our campaign to Protect the Wild calls for a better balance, one that delivers clean energy while safeguarding the wild places that define us. Read more.

At Glenlude, Ellie is enjoying the arrival of spring at our award-winning conservation hub in the Scottish Borders. Read her illustrated description of what the team has been up to (and don't forget to scroll to the bottom to see some lovely camera trap footage that captures an enterprising tawny owl repurposing our squirrel feeder). Thunderbolts and lightning in Coventry didn't frighten the guests who joined us for the first of this season's walks and talks in Charterhouse Heritage Park. Read Alison's account of the events. There is still time to book a May event. Find out more information about the dawn chorus walk or photography walk and how to book a space.

Connecting people to wild places

To celebrate John Muir Day on 21 April 2026, we invited our supporters to spend 21 minutes in a wild place and, of course, the Trust’s staff team couldn't resist joining in. Bet you can't guess what the preferred activity was?Hint: it involved Blue, Molly, Marmite among others. Read more highlights of how we spent our specially-extended-by-21-minute lunch break.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful gift for a whisky and nature enthusiast, these rustic photo frames from Whisky Frames offer a meaningful way to preserve memories and preserve wild places. Each purchase helps ensure that the landscapes we know and love can continue to thrive for everyone - forever. Read more about this inspiring partnership and browse the collection.
